How-To: Setup Multi-Store in OpenCart

Quite a number of our clients require the multi-store function in OpenCart however I found that the process – even though simile – isn’t well documented and for doing your first multi-store setup it can be a bit confusing. Here I’ll detail how to setup an additional store in your multi-store setup.

For my version of the tutorial I’ve demonstrated how to set this up using cPanel 11 (x3 theme) and the OpenCart admin interface.

Take for instance your main shops URL is www.shop1.com with the admin interface located at www.shop1.com/admin.

In cPanel

  1. Enter your cPanel interface (www.shop1.com:2082)
  2. Click on Domains
  3. Add your additional shops domain (let’s say www.shop2.com)
  4. Enter the document root as the path to your main store (such as what you’d upload to in FTP) – this is usually just /public_html/
  5. Add the domain
In OpenCart Admin

  1. Go to your OpenCart admin interface (www.shop1.com/admin)
  2. Click on System, then Settings
  3. Click Insert
  4. Enter all details about your store with the store URL as http://www.store2.com/
  5. Click Save
After your new domain has propagated to the server you should be able to access the domain and see a new store. (note: some appearance settings including products, categories and information pages may be the same as your main store however these can be reconfigured)

Hmm interesting, I was thinking about doing this when i set up a company’s 2 online store in timaru but couldn’t quite get my head around the concept. so i just hosted 2 scripts on the same hosting provider. Who we are hoping to change to you:) So i just forwarded the extra domain name to the sub-domain of the other one

Thanks for your comment, Cameron. Setting up 2 individual stores will certainly do the trick however having a Multi-Store setup is definitely the way to go in the future if it's for the same company as all orders and customer credentials are in the same area, rather then two separate administration panels.
